WELLINGTON. Saturday.
With reference to a statement made by the principal of the Nelson College, Mr. C. H. Broad, in regard to the Riddiford Cup cadet shooting competition, the Defence Department explains that the competition wag carried out under the same conditions as for last year, when Nelson College won and Scott's College were runners up. The programme was sent to all competing-schools some weeks before judging took place. After the award was published Nelson College brought forward the point that the strength of Soott's College was below 100. Conditions for the Riddiford Cup do not make it necessary that a school should tw of the strength of 100 or more. If this were done eight per cent, of the secondary schools could not compete. The Department adds that the conditions for the Campbell competition, which i 8 for cadet companies other than secondary schools, do insist that a competing unif'should be 100 or more, and the conditions for the Passmore Shield, for which secondary schools formerly competed, includes this alflfi; hence arose the apparent misunderstanding on the part of Mr. Broad.
