FUTURE WATER SUPPLY.

POSSIBILITIES OF TAUPO. NO NEED FOR MANY YEARS. \ .- -. r-. : . -^M The possibility of Auckland looking to .Taupo in the distant future for its water supply wag touched upon by the Mayor, • , •Mr. J. H. n.jr.son; in tho course of his address to the ratepayers on the city loan proposals in the Town Hall last - evening. Having mentioned that the present water supply from the Waitakere •. ■-■ ■ and Nihotupu areas- had been obtained at a low capital cost, as would be the ; case with the Huia scheme, relatively ; ... to any other adequate scheme the Mayor said that the only other sufficient . ; alternative would be the head waters of ■ Lake Taupo. It would be impracticable to gravitate satisfactorily from any point in the Waikalo, so that to obtain any :J supply Lake Taupo alone offered *-S solution. The total capital cost, of this alternative proposal, without submitting details, would be £2,500,000. It would ;-- therefore be seen that for low capital -;; cost reasons for many years to come the t-, Waitakere schemos— .when the , Huia proposal was put into effect, i ; would represent a capital investment of jf ; £1,191,285- offered a safe and reasonably cheap water supply for the city. .-v^It would pay better to follow this policy even if all Waitakere had to be ''scrapped" when, eventually, the big * city of the distant! future might have to ■ a go further afield.
