LAYING OF FOUNDATION STONE. ; , 1 . The foundation stone of the new Roman Catholic School at Onehunga was laid on Sunday afternoon by Bishop Geary. . 1 Addressing the gathering, Monsignor Mahoney said the school would supply the wants of the parish for some time to come,' for although there were only 261, children on the roll at present, provision was made for 500. The contract price for the building was £5811, nearly £1400 being already in hand. Mr. J. E. Cowell, Mayor of Onehunga, emphasised the importance of education, which, he' said, should not only prepare the young for the responsibilities - of citizenship, but also be the foundation of a national character. • Bishop Cleary said the building ui course of erection would be a monument to the wholeheartedness tof the Roman , Catholic parishioners in the interest of their, children. He was pleased to see so many of other faiths there in sympathy with their cause— glory of God. _~ At the conclusion of the ceremony a collection was taken, the building fund being substantially increased.
