GISBORNE-NAPIER LINE.
QUESTION OF ROUTE.
INLAND OR COASTAL.
[BX TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBORNE, Saturday.
The Hon. J. G. Coates left this morning for the Waiapu district. Ho will return to Gisborne on Monday and then leave for the Urewera Country, via Hangaroa.
Deputations from local bodies to the Minister to-day presented district requirements in road and railway matters, strongly urging the advantages of the authorised Hangaroa inland route for the Gisborne southwards railway in preference to the coastal route now being surveyed. Th Minister declared that the position required thorough and considerate thought, not bustle. Where an expenditure of a million pounds was involved it was absolutely essential that care should be taken, and until the surveys were completed he could say no more.
