SEINING IN THE GULF.

RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED.

THAMES FIRTH PROTECTED.

DECISION OF THE MINISTER

Seine-net fishing is, it is understood, to be prohibited in the Firth of Thames, and also in the ordinary trawling limits.

The whole question of purse-seining, as it is called, has recently been under the direct consideration of the Minister for Marine, the Hon. G. J. Anderson and others officially concerned with the fishing industry., It had been alleged that purseseining tended to the destruction of immature fish, and also was damaging, from a fishing point of view, to the sea bottom. In a trip on Friday in the Auckland steam fishing vessel Countess, the Minister inspected the method of fishing in question. Subsequently, Mr. Anderson and representatives of the Marine Department discussed the matter with representatives oi Thames fishermen and of the Auckland trawling industry. It is now stated that instructions have been given to prohibit purse-seining south of a line from Deadman Point, on the Coromandel Coast, to Ponui Spit Light, and also the trawling limits.

The line decided upon as marking the boundary of the prohibited seining ground extends across the mouth of the Firth of Thames, and means that no such method of fishing may bo emploved within tho firth.
