[by TELEGRAM.OWN correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. An unusual war is being -waged between two grocers in the northern part !of the city. The chief ammunition that I is being fired at the public at less than I cost price, is bread. The two i grocers are near neighbours as far as i their business premises are concerned, ' but that fact is not the whole reason for ' the present battle. A month or so ago | the grocers were in partnership, but the I partnership was dissolved. The name | of the business was then changed and !as far as the public were concerned i that seemed to bo the end of the matter. |In the meantime, however, ono of the j partners was making arrangements to ! open a business on his own. The next episode in the drama occurred ! last week when passers-by were sur- : prised to observe another grocery estab- ! lishment opening up. War was declared I and the public were kept advised of the progress of the campaign by bulletins in \ the respective windows. A start was made with bread. One ! started selling it at 5d per 21b. loaf and ! the other reduced his price to the same level. It descended I quickly to 4d, then 3Jd, and then 3d. i According to the latest bulletin the bread ; was being retailed over the counter at I 2jd a loaf. Residents in the vicinity of ! the two stores are reported to be buying ;up extraordinarily large quantities of I bread.
