DEGREE FOR MR. BRUCE.

HONOURED AT CAMBRIDGE

ROWING DAYS RECALLED. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Nov 23. Tho University of Cambridge conferred the LL.D. degree on Mr. Stanley Bruce, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth. The public orator, presenting Mr. Bruce, said that while Mr. Bruce was at Trinity Hall he was eminent in athletics rather than in the pursuit of learning. He was a vigorous oarsman himself and an inspirer of oarsmen. In Gallipoli he was a soldier and an inspirer of soldiers. Now he was a Prime Minister and an inspirer of Prime Ministers. Mr. Bruce, in response, said that there was no statesmen alive with vision -to understand what it would mean to develop the British Empire. - That task had not yet been begun. The Daily Chronicle reports that Mr. Bruce said that he entered the political arena of the Commonwealth on the strength of one funny story which came to his rescue at tho right moment. He added that the competition could not have "been strong in Australia or he would not have become what he was.
