Dr. Schmalzried, who was captured by brigands on ; November 13 on the Kweichow-Hunan border, belonged to T The American Charge d'Affaires has addressed a note to the Chinese Foreign Office protesting against, the failure of the authorities to protect missionaries in the interior, and asking the Government to communicate "With the provincial authorities requesting that every possible measure be taken to secure Dr. Schmalzried s release, also to protect, other missionaries at Tungjen. " ..
