AN EXPENSIVE LUXURY.
FINES FOR OYSTER PICKING.
Oysters unlawfully picked from various beds in the harbour proved an expensive luxury for seven persons, who .were prosecuted for the offence in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S. M. A variety of excuses and explanations was offered by the offenders but a fine of £5 and costs £3 10s was imposed in each case, except one in which there was an additional £1 for witness'
expenses. Mr. Paterson appeared for the prosecution, r The defendants were H. Henderson (Mr. A. Moody), Christopher Sproat, William H. Franklin, J. F. Boyce, W. Samson, George E. Harle ■ and Mehowaka Clark. The latter was a Maori who had boen found in possession of oysters picked at Church Bay, Waiheke. Three of the defendants had been detected picking oysters at Surfdale, two at Brown's Island) and one at Oneroa.
