An endeavour is being made among the returned soldiers of. this district to establish a permanent firing party for Te Aroha go as to be iin readiness to act at the funerals of deceased comrades. The fat bullock weight-guessing competition, conducted in connection with the recent Thames " Valley : Show, resulted as follows:—H. Windsor, 0. G. Munro, and T. W. .Cook' (8371b.) first; Roy Clark, P.' D. A Bygrave and J. Mathews (8351b.) second ; the correct weight being 8381b. A military funeral was atcorded the late Mr. W. " P.: Smith; Deceased was a Main Body man. (16th Waikatoa), and was severely wounded at Gallipoli. He was the second son of Mr.' H. Smith, of Ash burton. A Te A roha businessman has handed to the local fire brigade J a; cheque for £5, in appreciation of the brigade's services at the recent fire in Whitaker Street.
