LATE SIR. W. HERRIES.

MEMORIAL AT TE AROHA.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT J TE AROHA. Friday. At a well-attended conference of local bodies, convened by the To Aroha Borough Council, to consider the proposal to erect a memorial to the late Sir William Herri was held here yesterday. Mr. R. Coulter presided. The clerk said that the local bodies on the Tauranga side of the range had asked that this conference should make a recommendation to be forwarded 'to Mr. C. E. Macmillan, MP., who will convene a conference to consider the recommendation. The Chairman stated that the Government had consented to contribute a £ for £ subsidy up to £250 towards a memorial. It was decided that the local bodies provide £250, plus the £250 from the Government, The question as to the most suitable place for the erection of the memorial was discussed. Mr. Howie contended that the memorial ought to be erected in the borough of Te Aroha, and not in the graveyard. Other speakers agreed, but the chairman said it would necessitate "ho less than £1000 to erect a suitable monument in the town. Moreover, he considered that the proper site was over the ground where tlje late Sir William's ashes were laid, and where persons would view the memorial and look back over the life of Sir William in a spirit worthy of such a man. From the discussion which followed, it was apparent that the remainder of those present thought likewise, and the question was dropped. A committee comprising Messrs. R. L. Somers, Q. Hedge, and W. C. Kennedy, and the chairman (Mr. R. Coulter) ex officio, was appointed to procure designs and to suggest the basis of contributions. An effort is to be made to have the memorial ready for the Prime Minister to unveil on his proposed trip 'to Te Aroha about February or March.
