THE MELBOURNE CUP.

A '"■ GREAT SPECTACLE. BITALLI'S WIN ANTICIPATED A. and N.Z. ' SYDNEY. Nov. 8. Cap day at Flemington in 1923 was aKoBfitkur pleasant, and the fact of two favourites fighting out the finish added to the enthusiasm of the occasion. , In a*description of the race, the Sydney Mo:ning Herald says:— was most hearily supported, Rivoli taking second place in the affections of -he public. The field presented a fine picture as the 26 contestant ) dashed away from the starting post, for they moved off together, and when the field settled down there was no bustling for good positions as the bulk of _ the horses seeded to have plenty galloping space. Aitiir several changes in the command, Paratoo and Mirthmaker divided honours at five furlongs, but it was soon apparent that this was only on sufferance, for, to the accompaniment of shouts of "Here comes Bitalli," the latter shot to the front, with dat.ger threatening from Rivoli, who was ridden hard by Munro, Bvfc Wilson was riding Bitalli con. dently, despite Rivoli's gar io effort to overhaul the leader, both displacing the true stamina of thoroughbreds in their finishing efforts. Bitalli had threequtrters of a length to spare as he flashed pas i tae post. Accarak moved up at the thr ie furlongs poo., but, despite a brilliant bui it of speed, it was clear it had no car ice of overtaking the leaders. Comique wan always handy and finished gamely fourth.. Bitalli justified the confidence reposed in him by his supporters, but Rivoli ran a great race, giving away a lot of «»ignt to his rival, who is a year older. NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE.
