Auckland's youthful elephant, Jamuna, will bo on parade at the Zoo for the first time next Saturday, when the children will be given an opportunity of'riding on her. spacious back. Since her arrival the elephant has b-en quartered at the City Council workshops at Freeman s Bay awaiting the completion of her new house at the Zoological Gardens, and as this accommodation is ready she will be taken to Grey Lynn before the end of the week. It has' been decided to limit her patrons for Saturday to 25, to allow her to become accustomed to the new conditions. The first ride, at three o'clock, will be given to Miss ■ Marjorie Rogers, of the Devonport School, and Jack Mulgan, ol the Maungawham School,, the winners of the first and second prizes respectively in the recent Zoo essay competition. The remainder of the 25 children will *o]ow, the arrangement being that there will be four rides round the tan bark track during the afternoon. Tickets entitling children to free rides will be issued at the turnstile in the order that they ar© applied for. ''"'•!'' v r, In presenting the elephant to the Zoo, Mr. John Court, stipulated that the children should be allowed to ride free on the animal for the first twelve months, and an announcement will be made as » where the tickets can be obtained. The 'Parks Committee of the City Council baa decided that there will be no Sunday elephant rides, a decision in keeping with other zoos. The chief day for the children, therefore, will be Saturday. Owing to the youth of the animal it has also been decided that the patrons will be confined to young children only, grown youths and adults being debarred for the present at any . rate. Next week a keeper from the Zoo will be sent to Australia to bring over the hippopotamus and another tiger from Melbourne, as well as.- the collection of coloured Australian birds now being held for the council in Sydney. These exhibits should be installed i. the Zoo by the end of the month. Advice has been received that the polar bears, the panthers and several other exhibits ' secured in London are to be shipped by the Waimana leaving Englani about the middle of the pret>eu» month. •
