SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

SECONDARY AND PRIMARY. SUGGESTION FOR CONFORMITY. An attempt to secure conformity in the dates of opening and closing of primary and secondary school terms and vacations is being made by the Department of Education. A memorandum was received by the Auckland Education Board yesterday sotting forth two tables of dates, one foi the North and one for the South Island, under which the opening and closing dates would synchronise. The board was asked to state whether it could made arrangements in accordance with these suggestions.* The acting-chairman, Mr. A. Burns, explained that the time-table suggested would moan an increase of two weeks in the Auckland primary school holidays, one at Christmas, and one at the end of the first, term. The opening dates of the holidays in both primary and secondary schools had been made to coincide, and he did not think the holiday should be further extended. Air. T. U. Wells spoke in favour of opening a week later after the Christmas holidays and cutting out tho extra week at the end of the term. Sir. V. H. Reed supported this idea, stating that February was a very hot month in North Auckland. Mr. J. P. MoPhail reminded members that a resolution had been carried by the board that no further change would be made without referring the matter to the Primary School Teachers' Association. It was decided to defer further discission until the association had been approached.
