EFFORT TO OPEN SAFE.
TWO GELIGNITE SHOTS. PAEROA SHOP ENTERED. SUSPECTED MAN ARRESTED. [BT TSXEQBArH.—OWN rORJtKSTONDENT.I PAEROA. Wednesday. The premises of the Psieroa branch of the Farmers' Union Trading Co. were entered at an early hour this morning, and an attempt made to blow open the safe with gelignite. Mr. D. Brown, tha local manager, who lives near the shop, heard two 'shots fired.' On going to investigate he saw a man leaving the shop and raised the alarm. The safe was badly damaged, but had not been opened. An entrance had been obtained by the breaking of a glass door in the front of the shop, and the locks opened from inside. A quantity of tobacco was found to be missing. Constable McClinchy was quickly on the scene, and later detained a man, who gave the name of George Scotchern. The police are making further inquiries.
