The board decided to apply accordingly. The Education Department declined to recommend any further concession toward the cost of conveyance to Matakohe school, and stated that in accordance with section 54 of the Act the board might bo required to provide the means of conveying the children to and from the school from ' its grants , for general purposes. The department was, however, considering the question of making special provision for the conveyance of children to centres such as Piopio and Otorohanga, and in such special cases the board .would prop ably not bo called upon to find any part of the cost. It was decided to protest against the department's attitude. The department notified a grant of £150, unconditionally, for the purchase of one additional acre for school purposes al Hautapu, and that if the committee raised subscriptions tor the acquisition of a second acre the Minister was 'prepared to favourably consider a further grant of £50. .
