THE EDENDALE ROAD.

CONSTRUCTION FOR TRAMWAY AGITATION '• FOR CONCRETE. RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION. The proposals of ■ the Mount" Albert Borough Council, in connection wjth the construction of. Edendale ; Road for the tramway extension along that thorough-' fare, are not meeting with ; general favour 3 from the Mount - Albert Ratepayers and Residents' "Progressive Association. :' The association is making an' effort to induce the Borough Council to put the road down in concrete, being convinced that even if this is • more costly than bitumised macadam the value will prove to be much greater in the end. The difference in cost is variously estimated as from £8000 to £10,000. "Tho matter was considered at some length at a meeting of the executive of the association on Saturday evening, when Mr. L. H. Crawford presided. _•;- It was rosolved tha>- if the. council rejects the association's proposal, that it place before the ratepayers a further loan of £8000 for construction 'in concrete, the association will do its utmost to have all three proposals which are being submitted on October 25" rejected. If, however, tho council agrees to the extra loan proposal the association is prepared to support all three proposals. V. » It was stated that the opinion o!: Messrs. Ashley Hunter, A. Greville Walker, and J. Blair Mason, had been obtained and they had agreed ,< that bitumen would cost 15s per square yard for the life of "the loan, 36i years, while concrete would cost only lis per square yard. The: upkeep of the former road would be £4000 for ten years, while that of a concrete road would be twopence per square yard per annum. There were no engineering difficulties to be faced in the laying of concrete and there would be no subsidence. The whole matter is to be considered at a special meeting of - the borough council on Thursday evening.
