PROTEST BY CHINESE.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 7.15 p.m.'* GENEVA. Sept. SO. The Assembly of the League of Nations elected the following nonpermanent members of the council tor the ensuing year:—Uruguay, Brazil, Bel. gium, Sweden, Czechn-Slovakia, and Spain The session has closed. ." The election of Czecho-Slovakia .instead of China as one of the six non-permanent members of the council, which was due to the activity of the Czecho-Slovakian representative, Dr. Benes, on the reduction of the Armaments (Committee, led to a protest by the Chinese delegation. The Chinese complained that the principle of the geographical distribution of non-per-manent members had not been respected, and that the council had been deprived of the co-operation of at least one Asiatic State. China fears that Far-Eastern States may be discouraged, and hopes that the possible consequent lack of interest in the League in China will not change into temporary or even permanent abstention, which would be most regrettable in the interests of all.
