NEW COUNCIL ASSEMBLES.

The first meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council since the recent by- ; election was . held last ■ evening. ■:y The'■' Mayor, Mr. ■• E. H. .Potter, - presided. There were also -present:—-Messrs A. M. Bryden;: W. Woolley, D. C. Fraser, W. G. Lange, F. Morris, G. L. Taylor, R. McK. Morison, ■J. M. Melville, L. Joll, S. Newcomb, J. P. Hooton,' and J. Smith. • '■■' ' ■- -•" ; - The usual declarations were made by the Mayor and the new members of the council, -Messrs Morris, Taylor,. Morison, Melville, and Smith. . " j V The council received a request to meet the City-Council in committee on Thursday evening, to consider the I' matter of; tramway "extensions on the main roads. It was decided -that as many, members as possible should attend. • T /,: ■In a short review, of : matters requiring attention, Ihe Mayor "mentioned the need for better accommodation at the fire brigade station. This matter, together with a report from the city brigade superintendent on Mount Eden requirements, was referred to the Brigade Committee. .The Mayor mentioned that the:reticulation ofelectric current was progressing at : : a good, rate, most of the poles having been erected. -: "■'•^ : y ! \'\ ' '*.-. * * * The engineer reported that work under the various sewerage. contracts was : progressing favourably, ; and a survey was in progress , forthe construction of a sewer in the block between Woodside Road and Fairview Road. v He recommended ; that early provision be made "for extension '•' of tho sewers for Penrhyn Road. The survey and ; plans providing for ' the v ;; improvement of Boundary Road were in progress. Authorised works . connected with the maintenance 4 of footpaths were about- exhausted, -and he ; recommended that the Streets Committee take into con-, sideration the prosecution ■[ of y. i further works of •; the nature. VJ; The ; report : was referred ;to the Works Committee. .: '• The following building permits report for"the period Aprils 1 to September was presented7B for dwellings, valued at £70,520; 36 for "shops,; £29,960 152 for alterations and additions, £11,785; 50 for sheds,> £2648; one factory, . £2900 ;i three hoardings,, £480; total-value; £118,293. ■;: v: On the recommendation |of the Finance Committee, i it .was' decided 'that debentures for No. 10 loan and Not 13 loan be printed at 6 per I cent, interest, and that provision ,be madV for placing the same. i ; The Auckland ! and ;' Suburban' Drainage Board wrote granting the connection of the Elizabeth Street surfac-3: water drainage with the sewer, subject ■■■ to f certain conditions, y- It was decided to accept the terms, and to-draw up plans of drain-
