DRIVING FLOCKS BY NIGHT.
PENALTIES PROVIDED.
It does not appear to be generally known that it is illegal to drive stock upon public highways at night. The Legislature, in making this decide, was actuated by two motives—safety of the public and also to prevent drovers of travelling mobs picking up other people's stock as they pursued their nocturnal journeys. Clause 58 of the Stock Act provides a penalty up to £50 and not less than £5 for anyone driving stock at night. This section of the Act provides that no person shall drive stock except between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. from March 31 to September 1, os between 4 a.m. and 8 p.m. during any other period of the year, unless they have secured a permit to do so from a justice, • auctioneer, stock inspector, postmaster, Or constable.
