RETURNS FOR SIX MONTHS.

AUCKLAND'S PREMIER POSITION.

i The official records of cargo handled at j ! New Zealand ports during the first six | months of 1923 show that imports from overseas were 740,045 tons against 642,946 tons during the corresponding period of 1922, while exports overseas were 391,924 tons as against 433,014 tons last year. Including coastal trade and transhipments, the total handled was 3,409,332 tons as against 3,074,877 tons in the first six months of 1922. . Comparative details for the principal ports—returns are given for 47 ports—are as follow :— ' , I

Of the oargo handled at Auckland, 582.297 tons were inwards, 181,725 tons outwards, and 34,901 tons were transhipments. Wellington imported 350,963 tons, exported , 144;984 tons, and handled 204.723 tons of transhipments.
