MARKETS FOR PRODUCE.

THE GOODWILL OF BRITAIN.

DOMINION'S COMPETITORS.

A few- observations on New Zealand's trade outlook abroad, Were advanced by Mr. Alan Colman, at the \ Auckland Rotary Club's luncheon yesterday.. Mr. Colman is a director of the world-known firm of mustard-makers, and his remarks were made in the course of an interesting address on various aspects of the mustard industry. - , , " It occurs to me from the little I have seen of New Zealand," Mr. Colman began, " that the future of this country will be decided in the nest few" years. It all depends who captures the English market, especially butter and meat." Mr. Colman said he did not believe New Zealand's future lay in following the Australian practice of adopting high protective policies. New Zealand, 'instead, should strike out for herself, firstly by investigating Great Britain's conditions and requirements, and secondly by devising a good immigration scheme. . < Of the two serious competitors which the Dominion had in Britain, Australia appeared to be marking time. She' had set out to bo a manufacturing country, and taxed everything that entered her borders. ; The other competitor was Denmark. ; ' „ ,-

" You have a great asset in ' England, ■which Denmark has not," declared Mr. Cblman, " and that is the good-will '~ of England. But there appears to be no big organisation , over there pushing your goods." Such an organisation, ! added the speaker, would be better than protection, which lie understood Mr. Massey intended asking for in Britain. It' would, ho thought, be a difficult task to persuade Britain to increase the price of her breakfast for the sake of raising wages in New Zealand. ."'. ;. • ' '.". "
