INTERFERED WITH MOTOR.
YOUNG MAN FINED £2. IMPRISONMENT IN FUTURE. An incident which occurred at the Victoria Street parking area on Tuesday evening resulted in the appearance of a young man, William Chesney (Mr. Hogg), in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. He was charged that, without colour of right, but cot so as to be guilty of theft, he attempted to take and convert to his own use, a motorcar. He was also charged with drunkenness. ■• Evidence showed that, a two-seater motor-car was left on the stand shortly after eight o'clock. When the owner returned two hours later he found the switch and the speedometer broken. The caretaker at the stand said he saw accused and another man near the cars. Accused got in a car and tried to make it go. Then no went to another car and got in it also, tampering with the instruments. . , For the • defence it was contended that accused was drunk, and was looking for a taxi to take him home. The magistrate said there had been too much interference with cars. If the man had got the car going he. might, have killed two or three people. Accused • was fined £2 and ordered to pay the damage. Mr. Poynton said in future imprisonment would result from interference with cars.
