RIVER ENCROACHMENT.
PROBLEM AT PARAWAI. j [BY TELEGEATH. —OWN COHKES2OXDENT.] THAMES. Tuesday. • A meeting of Parawai residents was held in the Parawai School last- night at the request of the Borough Council, to consider the question of protective works against th« steady encroachment of the Kauaeranga River on the. land situated on the north and eastern side, which has gradually been eaten away by the action of the current for the last 60 years. This question was considered by the borough council, and that body came to the conclusion that it had no responsibility with respect to it, as it only affected the owners of land in the vicinity of the river at the present time. Mr. Miller, deputy Mayor, stated that the Public Works Department had in-' quired into the matter and had furnished a report regarding the necessary protective works to prevent further erosion by the rivor. It was estimated they , would cost £750, of which the department had agreed to find £250. • i Several speakers addressed the meeting, eatprossing the opinion thai the question was a most important one in the interest of'■ the'whole, district, as the encroachment of the river was constantly taking place, and. causing serious loss of land to the owners. The opinion was generally expressed that the matter should be dealt with by the borough council as one affecting the whole district and should be treated under the heading of flood prevention works. It was finally decided to ask the council to undertake the necessary protective works :as soon as possible.
