EXPLORER FOR, RICCARTON. .{BBOM OTTO OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Explorer it looking remarkably well, and be can be ticked off among the most probable horses to contest the Grand Nationals at Riccarton next month. One day, last week Explorer was put over a couple of fences, taking the hencoop in fine s'yle, but he stopped badly at the brush. \ However, the gelding will no doubt shape all right in company. He ; looks nice and fresh; and • will take a lot of beating in< any event in which he is started' at Riccarton. ■"■ All being well, Mr. Nicolls will probably . make a move southward during the. present week. ':■■■■ Crucelle, by Signor—Cruoinella, ; having broken down, she has been returned to her owner, Mr. D Cullinane, and will not be raced again. . ; : :';:.."..•'■ '< Alario has returned from Wellington. The San Fran, gelding is. suffering from a cold, which attacked him-before he raced at Trentham, but fortunately he managed to win there. After the race he was in rather a bad way. and it may be some time before he is seen out again. : Mr. W. Dwyer, who owns Alario, intends to seoure another horse or two; He had intended returning to Australia, shortly, but has, for tho present at all events, abandoned the trip. ■" : ": _ Hindi (E. Copestake) and Listowel (P. Rayner) were companions in a spin over five hurdles on Thursday morning, • when both shaped well, jumping almost perfectly, Listowel displaying more pace than his companion. Both geldings are likely to do well at the jumping game, particularly Listowel. Malingerer was sent for a run over five furlongs on Thursday, the time recorded being 1.7}. The big fellow is looking very well, and should run well in his engagements at RiccaTfcon. Malingerer • ran seven furlongs at a solid pace on Tuesday. He appeared to get through the heavy going well. He will leave here about Tuesday next for Riccarton. Mr. B. T. Bennett, owner of Khartoum and Naughty, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis, has sufficiently recovered to return home. His many' friends will hope to see him about again very shortly. . ;•> The report that Kanaka, the five-year-old son of Maniapoto, had been sold, was apparently incorrect, an the gelding is still in T. Long's stable, and in being got ready for the early spring, meetings.
