BITUMEN AND METAL. 1 The : Onehunga Borough Council last evening decided to take a poll of the ratepayers on a proposal ,to raise £75,000 to carry out an extensive road improvement scheme for . the borough. 'It is intended to lay 6£ miles of roads in. bitumen, 7£ miles in blinded metal, and 8£ miles in scoria, making a total of 22£ miles. ; •'. ', ' Reporting on the scheme, the engineer, Mr. F. Hempleman, stated that every road in the borough - would receive attention. The total costs were estimated as follows: — / Bitumen road -v . ■ *. . » £19,250 Blinded roads . K .. . . 6,866 Scoria roads • . .. . • 8,600 Kerbing . . . . :. . . • 10,000 Forming roads and paths . . 22,000 Plant ... . ... 6,000 Contingencies . . .... .*. 2,284 £75.000 As regards kerbing, it is proposed to kerb in scoria concrete each side of the u.nkerbed streets and form a bituminous gutter. The total length of this work will be 37£ miles. The following streets are set aside for bituminous formation Upper Queen Street, 41 chains; Mount Smart : Road; 70; Church Street, 128; Campbell Road, 58; Beach Road, 15; Alfred Street, 15; Victoria Street. 10; Mays Road, 60; Princes Street, 70; Mount Albert Road, 10: . Mill Street, 10. The metal roads will comprise the following —Quadrant and George Streets. 58 chains; Victoria Street, 51 Trafalgar Street, 14; Arthur Street, 100; Hill Street, 12 Clarke Road, 16; ; Captains Springs Road, Esplanade Road, 25 Selwyn Street, 65; Felix Street, 22; Grey Street, 84; Neilson Street, 47; Cardwell Street, 24; Symonds Street, 27; Nixon Street, 10; Normans Hill Road, 40. There are 30 streets which it ib proposed to lay in scoria. The Mayor, Mr. J. E. Cowell, said the scheme had been considered by. the whole council in' committee, when it cam© to the conclusion .that this was'the only solution of the present difficulty regarding- roads He therefore moved the adoption of the scheme and that a poll of ratepayers be taken to sanction a loan of £75,000 to pay for tho work.. The Mayor further 'stated that before the poll was taken, several public meetings would be held in different parts of the borough, to explain the proposals to the ratepayers.
