USING THE OTIRA TUNNEL. THROUGH FREIGHT RATE. [By : TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL . REPORTER.] WELLINGTON, Friday. The; Christchurch members of Parliament do not believe in '■', letting the city suSer from a coal shortage in silence. In the House of Representatives this ; afternoon, Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Avon) asked the Minister for Railways, the Hon. J. G. Coates, whether he could not "brush aside the. departmental , delays which '„ have occurred," and at once make a through rate on coal sent by rail from thei West Coast to , Christchurcn." The position,' said Mn Sullivan, was still exceedingly acute. Mr. Coates: I don't know what there is for me'to brush aside. We want to get the Public Works Department out of the tunnel as soon as possible. At" present we have two. overhead staffs. , ' , The i Minister 'added . that . the .present rate' oncoal was 18s lid a ton. It had ] been said that a through rate would mean I a -redaction of 10s a ton. ; He did ; not ■ know about that.
