INDIA AND THE LEAGUE

MEMBERSHIP UPHELD. NATIVE . APPRECIATION. Eeuter. DELHI, July 17. • The Legislative Assembly debated an unofficial motion proposed by an Indian member in favour of the appointment of a committee to consider the question of the continuance of the financial grant to the League of Nations as a protest against the treatment of Indians in the' mandated territories and the Pacific Islands. . The leaders of the Nationalists and the Labour Party, both former representatives of India in the Assembly of the League, and other members strongly opposed the motion, stressing the usefulness of the League, and ponding out that recent labour legislation in India was largely due to the efforts of the International Labour Organisation forming part of the machinery of the League. They considered that the motion was premature and misconceived, and that the interests <ii the coloured. races were likely to suffer if India withdrew from the League. The motion was withdrawn.
