COMPENSATING MAORIS.
OCCUPATION OF LAND. PATUTAHI CASE OPENED. [BY. TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] GISBOENE. Wednesday. The hearing of the Patutahi native case was formally opened by the Native Land ~Court to-day, when a very large number of natives attended the sitting. The "representatives of the various claimants stated their cases, after which the Court adjourned until to-morrow. The case which concerns the compensation to be paid'in respect of alleged wrongful occupation by the. Crown of a large aisa of land at Patutahi at the close of the Han Hau rebellion promises to,be one of the most important : ever heard before the Native Land Court at Gisborne. Claims have been filed •by natives from all parts .of / the district,
