The Secretary of Marine report* that he , has received advice from the : secretary | of the General Post Office to the effect .! that the Awanui wireless station had reported signs of a vessel being on > ax* south-west of Ahipara, in the vicinity | of the Ninety Mile Beach, toward Cape Maria Van Dieroan. They clearly saw dense volumes of smoke. . '.■■ f, On receipt of that advice, telegraphic instructions were sent to Whangape ;to despatch a tug immediately. Last night a telegram was received stating that the vessel was a considerable distance north of Ahipara, and • not south-west, as -previously reported; that she appeared to be inshore, and that a party had gone out by motor from Te Paki to investigate, and should return shortly. Any later report would bs forwarded for publication. , . A later message states that the party from Te Paki had returned from the head, but had seen nothing of the reported burning vessel.
