RACING.

BAY OF PLENTY CLUB.

MEETING AT AVONDALE.

SURVEYOR WINS THE CUP.

The Bay of Plenty Jockey Club's meeting, held at Avondalc yesterday, attracted a good number of racegoers to the westem suburb, but with ideal weather conditions ruling the attendance was somewhat below anticipations. Those who made the journey to Avondale had the pleasure of witnessing a most interesting afternoon's sport, and without a single jarring note from first to last the outing pioved most enjoyable. The race track was in capital order, and fast times were a feature of the racing. The management of the meeting was throughout very satisfactory, and the last event was run off close "up to the time stated on the programme. Th"> totalisator investments amounted to £24,886 10s, which is £5780 10s in advance of the sum handled at the club's meeting last year, which was held at To Aroha.

The opening event of the programme was the Greerton Handicap, which | brought the strong field of 29, and this necessitated the contestants being rangedup in two lines at the post. Jaffna acted as pacemaker until well inside the distance, when Lady Hill shot up with an attractive run, and cutting down Jaffna 50yds. from home, won her race nicely. The winner is a racy-looking five-year-old daughter of Bezonian and the Cuirassier mare, Lady Hune. The Harini Hurdle Race brought out a field of 10. Oranga went up to win his race six furlongs from home, and with a good advantage at the half-mile post he looked like scoring. Wish Wynne, however, came along with a stiff challenge to the favourite, and the Marble Arch mare always had the best of her rival in the run up the straight. The Mounganui Handicap, which was confined to the two-year-old division, brought out 13 youngsters. Charlady had most to say in the early stages of the contest, but Aerofortis waa in command at the head of the straight, and, finishing up her task splendidly, won attractively from another filly in the shape of Pelham. The winner is an Australianbred filly by Aerofox from the Ladas mare, Tarlillian. The Tauranga Cup was the next event to claim attention, and when the numbers went up it ves found that the field had been reduced to 10 by the withdrawal of Loyal Irish and Sycorax, Pentagram was made favourite, with Surveyor, Royal Abbey, Uncle Ned, Boomerday, Perfect Day, Sir Otway, Arch Salute, Stork, and Marble Bell backed in that order. Royal Abbey took command at the end of two furlongs, and the big chestnut carrying the field along at a slashing pace he showed the way into the straight, ,and his prospects still bore the bright tint at the distance. Surveyor, who got a clean run next the rails caught his Waikato rival at the centre of the main stand, and wearing him down drew away and won by a neck in the good time of 2m. 7s. In a field of nine saddled up to contest the Katikati Handicap, Cool Stimulants was made favourite; with Alfort, Prince Abbey, and Golden Bubble backed in that order. Golden Bubble, who filled the role of pace maker, was first into the straight, and the big chestnut 'surviving a strong challenge on the part of ■ Cool Stimulants got home, first by a head amid much excitement. The Bay of Plenty Steeplechase brought out a field of eight. Shell Shock was the one singled out for special attention, the others being backed in the following order: Pittsworth, No Bother, Esplanade, Mary Bruce, Vociferate, Totara Jack. The backers of Pittsworth had not to wait long to recognise they had lost their money, for the second favourite struck the second fence heavily and unseated his rider. Toddy, who carried the field along at a solid pace, held command until the concluding five furlongs came to be undertaken, when Shell shock and Mary Bruce, racing stride for stride at the bush fence, showed the way. The two leaders raced at the concluding obstacle, at which Shellshock fell, and Mary Bruce was thus enabled to run home an easy winner. ' A field of eighteen was found on hand to contest the Oropi Hack Handicap, for which Florent was the popular fancy. Jolly Gay, Narrow Neck and Quaestor being the others strongly supported. Winning Lass was the early pace-maker and then Flying Planet secured the lead, but they both compounded when it came to business, and in an exciting finish Mirget got home first by a neck from Quaestor, who narrowly defeated Polini and Jolly Gav for second honours. The concluding event of the programme was the Te Puke Welter Handicap, for which there were 15 contestants. Bright Day, Marble Slab, Far North, and Smoke Concert were backed in that order, Prince Rnfus worked his way into the lead a furlong from the start and led the field well into the straight, but the concluding stage found him out; and Smoke Concert, who had always been well up, finishing with remarkable grit, ran home a winner.
