POLICE COURT NEWS.

MAN CHARGED WITH THEFT.

MAGISTRATE DOUBTS GUILT.

A charge of stealing £2 8s at Te Awamutu on March 13, was denied by Thomas Strange, aged 49, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Police Court, yesterday. It was slated on accused's behalf that while paying a visit to Te Awamutu he became " paralyticdly drunk " and removed the money from his bed-mate's trousers to the dressing table before retiring for the night, mistaking the trousers for his own. He squared accounts with his companion next morning, however, and was surprised to find that the latter had laid an information. As accused was subject at the time to the terms of a probationary license a further charge, which would be dependent on the outcome of the theft charge, was laid against him of having committed a breach of his probation order. Remarking that the case did not seem to bo one of theft, the magistrate remanded accused to appear at Te Awamutu in a week's time.

GAOL FOR DRUNKENNESS. A heavily-built woman, Minnie Harris, aged 55, with 37 previous convictions for drunkenness, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. She was found drunk in Market Square on Tuesday.
