PLANS FOR ACCOMMODATION

The Auckland Harbour Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. H. B. Mackenzie, presiding. There wero also prosent : Messrs. W. Wallace, J. Henderson, W. B. Leyland, E. J. Carr. J. B Teasdale, M. H. Wynyard, E. H. Davis, T. B. Clay, and the Hon. E. W. Alison, M.L.C. The director of horticulture wrote asking theboard if it could provide accommodation in shed No. 8 on the Central Wharf as an examination room for the fruit inspector. The traffic manager reported that as the Customs Department was willing to have part of its accommodation upstairs if it removed to shed No. 8 it would be possible to give the fruit inspector shed space of from 25ft. to 50ft. square. The matter was referred to the board in committee. The question of dredging the berths and approaches on both sides of Prince's Wharf to 35ft. 1.w.0.5.t., as recommended by the harbourmaster, was referred to the Works Committae to report to the board. The suggestion by the harbourmaster that on account of the firefloat being so often away at Rangitoto the fire engine and pumps should be transferred to the tug Te Awhina was deferred until the estimates are being reconsidered next July. The Avondale South Community Guild wrote stating that the sea was washing away the foreshore at Blockhouse Bay, Marinkau Harbour, and asked that steps be taken to stop the erosion. The chairman said the board had no jurisdiction in the matter as the property in question belonged to private individuals. Two requests for reduction in charges were received. With reference to the fire on the Canadian Pionecrr the Canadian Government Merchant Marine asked that on account of the circumstances of the ship being in distress part of the wharfage and storage charges should bo remitted. The New Zealand Shipping.Company asked for a reduction in the storage charges on part, of the cargo shipped by the Piako, which left Auckland during loading operations and returned later. Both requests were referred to the board in committee.
