ELECTRIC LIGHT POLES.

NEW DUTY IMPOSED. PENALISING HEWN TIMBERCHARGE OF 20 PER CENT. A point of considerable importance to electric power suppliers came before t.hi» Auckland Electric Power Board yesterday, when it was announced that the Customs Department had demanded duty on a consignment of poles just landed A formal appeal to Wellington had elicited a reply to the effect that in future duiv would be charged on hewn poles. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, said it was a serious matter. When the board was dealing with tenders for poles complaints were made that in certain areas it was erecting undressed poles, which did not look very handsome. It was decided therefore, to have dressed poles. During the. past 1,2 months the Government had taken off tho duty on electric machinery, so it was hard to understand why it was now putting 20 per cent, on poles, which coitld not be produced in the Dominion. It was decided that representation should he made to the Prime Minister and to the Minister for Customs seeking a rebate or to have the poles placed on the free list, as in the past.
