NIHOTUPU DAM.
WEARING COMPLETION. OPENING ON APRIL 18. The great dam at Nihotupu, which is to hold 540,000.000 gallons of water, is almost completed, and is to be officially opened on April 18. The Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, stated yesterday that the Prime Minister had been asked to perform the opening ceremony, and it was hoped that Mr. Massey would be able to comply with this request. The ceremony would "be open to all citizens who would, however, be required to find their own means of reaching the site. The Works Committee of the City Council will pay one of its periodical visits to the construction works to-morrow, and will make the final visit on April 7. when the whole of the construction work should be completed. The total cost of the dam will reach £196,000, including payments made to the contractors who handed the project over to the City Council about two years ago. owing to their inability to carry out their contract. '
