BY-ELECTION SURPRISE.
LAST MINUTE CANDIDATE.
MINISTER INDIGNANT. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 23. Nominations for the Mitcham by-elec-tion produced a last-minute surprise. Liberal and Labour candidates have been campaigning against Sir A. Griffith Boscawen, Minister for Health, the Conservative candidate, for some time, and all three were nominated early. Ten minutes before the close an Independent Conservative candidate was nominated. Sir A. Griffith Boscawen describes the act as treachery to the Conservative Party and the Government.
Sir A. Griffith Boscawen, former Minister for Agriculture in the Coalition Ministry, who was appointed . Minister for Health by Mr. Bonar Law, was defeated at the general election for Taunton. aj the resignation of Dr. T. C. Worsfold, Conservative member for Mitcham, Surrey, it was thought that a safe seat had been found for him.
