BAILIFF AND BAND.

SEIZURE OF INSTRUMENTS. WELLINGTON WATERSIDERS ACTION ON CONTEST GROUND [BT TELEGRAPH.PBESS association.] DUNEDIN. Saturday. An unfortunate incident occurred ■at the conclusion of the quickstep competition at the Dunedin Band Contest _on Saturday afternoon, when a bailiff waited on the conductor of the Wellington Watersiders' Band and said he had authority and power to take the band's instruments. As a result the band was unable to compete in the own choice selection in the evening. The Redfern, Invercargill, Hibernian, and Ashburton bands generously offered the use of their instruments, but the offer was not accepted. As far as can be gathered, the reason for the action taken arose out of the recent action taken in Wellington, when two or three members of the Watersiders' Union proceeded against the union for preventing them working on the wharf and were, awarded damages. The Mayor of Dunedin, at the function in the evening, said it was most regrettable that such an incident should have occurred, and he considered that the bailiff should at least have waited until the programme had concluded before taking action.
