GENEROUS CITIZENS.

EULOGY BY THE MAYOR. FINE PUBLIC SPIRIT. The fine public spirit existent in Auckland was commented upon by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, last evening during; the City Council's discussion of the zoo loan proposal. He said that, in addition i to the gifts of animals for the zoo to which reference had already been made, there were other offers before the Parks Committee which it was not yet'ln a position to disclose. He mentioned this, not because the council appreciated the gifts so much for their intrinsic value, which I was really nothing to a corporation like I that, which could purchase the animals ! required, but, because it appreciated the | : continuation in Auckland of that public spirit that led the citizens to so often give for the sake of the city they -loved. It was an indication that the citizens had ; sufficient public spiritedness and unselfishness to give to a community among which tfcev and 'cheir children bad their homes. It had always been like this "in Auckland , from the time of Sir George Grey down to the present. He felt it would be the I wish of all the members of the council that he should voice these sentiments to show how they appreciated the generous co-operation of the citizens. (Applause.) He suggested that this generosity might , also be shown in the direction of many ! other civic activities such as the parks, {libraries, etc. " .
