*• —- WORK OF THE CLAIMS BOARD. MANY OASES RELIEVED. ; The Executive of the Auckland Provincial Patriotio arid War Belief Association met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. J. H. Gunson, presiding. There -were also present Messrs.. W. B. Leyland. E. F. Andrews, N. A. Nathan,; V. .learner, A. J. Entrican, E. Phelan, C. V. Houghton, H. Horton, A. F. Mackay. C. Rhodes, and G. H. Wilson. The claims board reported ; having considered 154 applications- for -assistance since the last meeting of the executive. Assistance was granted in 80 cases and | declined in 74. The total amount voted by the board was £403, an average o* slightly over £5 per success! applicant. A large number of the applications declined were from men who were not suffering any physical disability ■•■ due to war service, and whose necessitous >. condition could not in any way be associated with their military service. . ' , " « " The board," added the report, has to consider many cases of recurring war disability and these receive sympathetic consideration. In a number of instances the disability recurs after a long period of civilian employment. These cases* are, of course, entitled to free medical treatment- from the military authorities, and while they are waiting for their applications for war pensions to be oe« mined the assistance granted by the board -is of very great benefit to themselves and their dependants. _ borne oi the applicants'* are men suffering -.
