PROHIBITION SENTIMENT.
EXTENSION IN S. AMERICA.
SUBJECT FOR CONFERENCE.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (R*cd. 9.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 4.
The Washington correspondent of the New York Times states that a further extension of prohibition sentiment in Latin America is indicated in the announce- ' ment on the agenda of the forthcoming fifth pan-American Conference to be held in March, which provides for consideration of measures to secure progressive diminution of the consumption of alcoholio beverages. _•./
, The United States at present is the only country to participate which has national-wide prohibition, but various other Central and South American countries have- partial prohibition. In Chile and Peru, where an extremely active campaign in favour of prohibition is being carried out, laws have been passed prohibiting the sale, of liquors on Saturday and Sunday, and in mining regions completely. Other Latin American nations also have laws restricting the sale of intoxicating beverages. It is expected that the conference will result in a programme of further restrictions.
