BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE SINGLES CONTINUED. FIVE TO CONTEST FINALS. MAXWELL WALKER UNBEATEN. The Carlton bowling green was en fete yesterday in celebration of the president's " At Home" in connection with the annual tournament of the Dominion Bowling Association. The function was honoured by the presence of Lord and Lady Jeliicoe, who were interested spectators. The president. Mr. W. Coltman, received his distinguished guest*, and during the afternoon presented Lord Jeliicoe, as. patron, with the association's gold badge, inscribed: "His Excellency, Viscount Jeliicoe of Scapa, G.C.8., 0.M., G.C.V.0., Admiral of the Fleet. Governor-General of New Zealand." Mrs. Coltman pinned the badge on the coat of Lord Jeliicoe, who expressed his appreciation of the honour. In response to the invitation of the president. His Excellency stated that he would be pleased to have the opportunity of witnessing some of the final games played off during the tournament. There were present upwards of 1000 people, who enjoyed the perfect day, and .. the delightful surroundings, together with the interest created in the various bowl-. ' : '.- ing contests. The green was gay with colour, and bright with' bunting, the flags from all the Auckland clubs being flown. Burnnand's band furnished excellent music, assisting in the gaiety of the assembly. Afternoon, tea was a pleasing interlude in the success of the social function. Hie ladies' committee assisted materially on the social side. • . . The preliminary rounds of the singles championship were continued on the West End, Ponsonbv, and Carlton greens, which were in perfect condition, throughout the day. The sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth rounds wore completed, under the " two-life" system, the results leaving five players to contest the finals. Maxwell Walker is the one unbeaten contestant. The best game of the day, and the most interesting, was that between Maxwell Walker, the Ponsonby player, and G. Crowley, the young Tauranga bowler. The latter gave a good exhibition against his more experienced opponent, who was playing at the top of his form. Crowley comes of a well-known bowling family—a father and three sons —who combine a distinctly strong lour, which will compete in the rinks competition, commencing on .Monday. , Interest also centred., in the game between Maxwell" Walker and Jury in the tenth round at Carlton. Walker was playing exceedingly well, and secured a long lead ovor his opponent, who was •off his game. . The semi-finals and final of the singles will be resumed to-morrow, or at such time as the players are available. The pairs competition, in which 200 pairs will be engaged, commence this morning at 9 a.m. on the greens referred to yesterday. There .will be two sub-sections on each green, with the exception of Auckland. Section winners will play off to determine the green winner on Saturday afternoon, if possible. All pairs have five games to play, three to-day and two tomorrow.
