TRADE WITH GERMANY.
QUESTION OF RESUMPTION.
WELLINGTON 'DISCUSSION. _ [BY TELEGRAPH.-—PRESS ' ASSOCIATION.] 1 ■>■■;■ : WELLINGTON. Tuesday.; [ The question of resuming trade relations with Germany was brought up at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce today. It was stated that New Zealand was probably tho only British Dominion which still prohibited trade with Germany and her allies during the great war. , It was suggested that the prohibition should bo now lifted to put New Zealand on the same basis as the other Dominions and other countries.
The opinion was expressed that there were adequate safeguards" provided against. '.. unrestricted trace by reason of the reparations duty imposed on German exports, and the dumping duty; also by the additional duty on goods imported from countries \ with depreciated currencies- that would be imposed in New Zealand. It was not likely, therefore, that importations would be on a, large scale owing to the tmccrtainty of' the cost to importers. ■''-. V-. However, after some discussion, it was agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the president to ascertain through the associated chambers the feeling of commercial interests in .New Zealand.
