CALLIOPE SEA SCOUTS.

CRUISE IN, A KETCH.

INSTRUCTION AND PLEASURE

The Calliope Sea] Scouts recently held a cruise in the ketch Huon Belle, of 48 tons, lent them by Mr. J. C. Craig. Captain R. A. Woods was in command, with ChiefOfficer H.G. 'Mills, Second-Officer H. Tarr, and Pilot J. Pelley. Thirty boys comprised the crew. Before the cruise commenced a social was held on board, and Mr. J. Swan was presented ;by the boys with a " swastika," or thanks badge, for help he has given them on several occasions. Kavvau Island .was the first place visited, and from there the -party went to Awaroa Bay, Waiheke. Later the ketch visited Thames, where the boys were entertained at the pictures by the scout commissioner for the district, the Rev. J. Mitchell. They then returned to Waiheke, where the ketch ' was requisitioned and used as a flagship for the Cowes Bay regatta. Leaving Cowes Bay at 10.45 one morning they had to face a strong westerly wind all the way to Auckland, . and reached Devonport at 2 a.m. on the following day. The general routine of the trip was work on the ship in the morning and shore It&ve in the afternoon. Reveille was sounded at 5.30 a.m., when every boy appeared on deck, stripped to the waist, with toothbrush, soap, and towel. At 6 a.m. the decks were washed down, and breakfast was served at 7.30 a.m., the boys doing the cooking themselves. During the morning' instruction was given in .heaving the lead, setting and furling sail, knotting, splicing, chart work, steering, signalling, and boat management. Two watches of four hours eachi were kept, but at nights in port only a quar-ter-master's and an anchor watch were maintained.

It is probable that the troop will be insnecled by the Governor-General, Lord .Tellicoe, on January 20, as His Excel-, lency has, expressed a desire to do so.
