RACING AT ' ELIiERSLIE. ' : The two days' - facing to be provided. at Ellerslie ; on Saturday and Monday next by the combined clubs (Dargaville Racing Club and Bay of Islands Racing Club) serves to keep things moving, and';- though .a grumble is heard in racing being brought .on. so soon after the big summer carnival, race-goers may he expected to congregate in strong force in the event of fine weather prevailing. - The Dargaville. • meeting, which is first on the list, :.has drawn .: capital acceptances, and the leading «ivent of ,the

programme—the .'-.- Dargaville Cup, with 15 horses engaged,— .sure'.to claim a lot of ■keen ; attention, ' for the handicapper, Mr. F. J. MoManemin, has succeeded admirably in' concealing the winner. . ' .'•*■s •,'

;> THE : WELLINGTON CUP. > ; The'next important event ilft the racing calendar to claim attention at the hand* of turfites is the Wellington Cup. ; which race cornea up for decision at Trentham on the 20th inst. The handicapper. Mr. H. Coyle, issued hiß adjustments in connection therewith on Monday. Income is Placed at the head of the list with 9.0., and;,/it, can be stoutly contended that he has earned .his position. Soion (8.10) should have a lot to say in the settlement of the question: ; and Insurrection (8 7 V must be kept on the right side. r Kick Off (8.5). Deucalion (8.1). Rapine (7.12). and Gold Light (7.10) are a auartette of recent winners that jread .well, and of that lot Gold Light is the'one that impresses me most, r Many Kittle (7.10) has been daintily Handled: and if he can be got to, reproduce the same form as he displayed at Riccarton in November he should be in a position to make ft bold bid for victory.

• ELYSIAN DEFUNCT.* The atallion Elysian was recently numbered among the defunct. Elysian, who was got by Soiilt from the Cadqgan mare Dream, land, won marked distinction in the spring of his three-year-old career, his captures at that period including the Avondale Guineas. Hawke's Bay Guineas, Champion Plate, New Zealand Derby, and Canterbury Cup. He'■' then soured of racing and his refusal to gallop was of such a pronounced character that it was deemed . useless to go. on with him. When Mr. H. E. Mackenzie established -the Ascot stud he bought Elysian, and on the - dispersal of that collection some four yoars back no one appeared to, want Elysian, even; at lOOgns. Elysian subsequently went to Mr. H. Gaisford's estate in Hawke's Bay, but whether he. had any sort of a chance to improve his stud record is a point on which I have no infonmvtion. :••'.'•'•.■• •" ■ '■'.._ - ; -■

LEAVES FROM MY NOTEBOOK. >• Mr. Spenoer Gollan, who has been rest, dent in England for a number of years, is at present on a visit to New Zealand, and at last advices was at his,' Mahgatarata Estate in Hawke's Bay. In the 80's and early -SO's Mr. ; Gollan, who : is a native ■of thii Dominion, figured among the leading sportsmen of Maoriland. and he also.-raced on a fairly extensive scale-in Australia for several seasons. , ~;He won. the v.B.C. Oaks with Tiraillerie. the V.8.C.; St. Letter with Culloden, and the A.J.C Derby with Bonnie Scotland. What would Da regarded by Mr. Gollan as the most pleasing incident in connection with his racing affaire was when be captured ;, the: Liverpool .Grand .National Steeplechase with the New : Zealand-bred gelding Moifaa. So far as racing in New Zealand is ooneerned Mr. Gollan's .colours have remained folded away for many ..years... The announcement that Royal , Box has been handed back to his breeder, Mr. G. I*. Stead, in exchange for a yearling may, I suppose, be taken to mean that the son or ; Nassau was not considered likely to attain i that prominence in his racing that some considered probable. Royal Box brought on i a sensational surprise ?when he .won ; the Great Northern St. Leger at Ellerehe in ! April last, whioh marked his last win prior ! to being bought by Mr. - Eric Riddif ord. The ! only success credited ■to Royal r Box in ; the interval was gained by the chestnut in the Maoara Handicap (6 furlongs),,at, Masterton, on October 14 last, when he carried : 8.9 home in front of a field of five, in lm. 15s. In the event of a change pi luok coming to Royal Box in going back to his old quarters to carry ..the yellow, jacket and- crimson cap of Mr. GT'L. Stead, suoh would be a;pleasing incident to chronicle. • The dual victory registered by Sunart at the Monawatu meeting f was. ?; accomplished in such style as to bring the Sunny Lake gelding into marked prominence* and though called upon to carry 9.6 in the Marton Cup he counted sufficient admirers to send him out. favourite;•■> Sunart made a bold" bid for victory, -but the Ulb. he was , called upon. to concede Kinsom proved just a little too much and the Autumnus mare beat him a neck in the fast time of. 2m ;6s, Sunart : is a candidate for honours in the ' Wellington Cup, and it is to be hoped that he will survive the necessary preparation to fit him for the struggle' at Trentham on the 20th instant - ■ . The Pahiatuft-.moetinff takes place to-day;■ The leading event is the Pahiatua Handicap, in which the four-year-old Cleasanta figures at the head of; the list with 8.18. The daughter of All Black has three recent wins to her credit, -.: but these successes were gained over a less distance than a mile and a-quarter. There is not, however, opposition at Pahiatua. . '

. Never Despair. is a, common-looking customer, but he can muster up a good dash of pace. He contested in each of the four •hurdle races X i that were ; derided at,,' the A.B.C. Summer Meeting, and what ' would be ; popularly r voted ■% his most^disappoint-i ~ ing, performance was : when, he •■■ • faded: away in the, concluding stages of the Auckland Hurdle i Race, which, put him outside > the placed division. 'Vln beipg ; called upon to run four; severe ?' races •;. ml the : space ; of y a,week may not have been to the r liking of 'the■'■"!*:big chestnut;"; but possibly he .does not relish a : two-mile journey at present; In the event of Never Despair learning to stay properly he . should be ..heard of across ; country. -; » v-The Chariemagnti gelding; Sir ;vHuon; ■■■ it .transpires, niet his end under 1 sensational : circumstances at; the ; West land 'Meeting *• on Boxing Day. Six Huon^ figured among the horses ; that assembled ; at : the' post 'in' order: to contest the , Goldfields'. : Handicap;' "and Mist prior -to thestart Benecto,' another contestant, proved unmanageable,;and. in his' vagaries cannoned into Sir Kuon with such force that 'the" latter; .was - hurled to the ground, and, a 'broken back resulting, •'■ the friendly bullet '■ had \; to' i be,; requisitioned. Benedto also fell, but, remarkable to relate,: he" escaped scathless. „ - ;:A cricket match has been arranged'to take place at Pakuranga ! on ' Friday ; next between .
