GAMING HOUSE KEEPER.
FINE OF £100 IMPOSED.

Allegations of widespread betting activities were made yesterday, in the Police Court when William Alexander Spiers, aged 46, appeared before Mr. 1 J. W. Poynton, 8.M., to answer a charge of using premises, occupied by. him, and known as the Star Billiard Academy, Newton Road, as a common ? gaming house.
Chief-Detective Mcllveney said that on Monday night the room was entered under a search warrant by Senior Detective Cumniings and Detective-Sergeant Ward, and they found documents which satisfied them that the accused was not only betting on Auckland races, but in respect of races in other parts of the Dominiondoubles and straightout betting. His bank-book showed a credit of £130 16s Id. The accused was a married man, and the speake-r understood he had had the room for two years. Accused said he was "Only in a small way." ■.-"■■ '■■"■:.■'•-■•. „ The Magistrate: You begin in a small way, but you grow. Big trees come from small seeds. Accused was! fined £100, in default three months' imprisonment. To an application for time for payment, the magi*istrate said he would be allowed a- reasonable time to get the money out of the bank. ■
