OLD IDENTITY OF BOMBAY.

BOMBAY, Friday, The death is announced at Rawarawa Of Mr. William Knowles Cornthwaite, Cfie of the founders of the Bombay settlement. For 57 years Mr. Cornthwaite had been closely identified with the development of this district.

Born at Brookhouse, Lancashire, h« came to New Zealand in the ship Bombay in 1865. Mr. Cornthwait6 always displayed a keen interest in everything connected with the district, and toojc a prominent p.irt im ita public affairs. For almost 50 years his was a member of the Bombay School Committee, >the major portion of that time as chairman and secretary, a position which he relinquished only three or four years ago. In earlier years Mr. Cornthwaite was secretary of the Mangatawihiri Road Board. The local library owes much to his devotion/ ' Always a staunch churchman, he occupied the voluntary post of organist to St. Peter's Anglican Church for 37 years. Mrs. Cornthwaite predeceased her huibajnd by seven years. Eleven members . of their family survive, six sons and five daughters. The funeral took place at the ChurcK of England cemetery on Tuesday, the Rev. C. A. Vaughan officiating.

Cohen, aged 65 years, sub-editor on the Evening Star, dropped dead this evening when entering the Commercial Travellers' Club-. Mr. Cohen is understood to have suffered from heart trouble. He is a brother of the Hori. Mark Cohen, M.L.C., and is survived hy a widow, one son, and two unmarried daughters.
