3 We? ft jWsfe c p| mm ■— *m jiii* ■ ■■■■maim r- : Pasteurised v. Unpasteurised Milk. : The following is taken {rom the Times, London, September, 12, 192''-, INFANT MORTALITY. J DISEASE FROM POLLUTED FOOD. [ *j MERITS OF PASTEURISED MILK. S To the Editor of the Times. y g Sir,—ln your issue of September 9, I read with much g 1 interest the article by your Medical Correspondent. j" j He seems to attribute to the fly # the mortal- L n ity which, even in the most favourable years, is so excessive p among infants. On the assumption that his view is correct. the damage is done by the contamination of food—and whether by flies or otherwise, that is certainly the truth, and medical knowledge is backed by common sense in this. Now, since milk is the food for infants, and the sole proper food, if we render this safe, we do all that is necessary to protect the lives and health not only of the young, but 0 others, not only from diarrhoea! complaints, but also from c 1 tuberculosis and other diseases. My lifelong experience in the United States, and particularly in Slew York City, enables me to state, as a proved fact, that by means of Pasteurisation we can achieve [_ 3 the most desirable object, that " wherever Pasteurisation B n has been introduced the. mortality among infants has fallen f\ as if feu magic."* , JJ § It is much easier to control milk-borne disease than g = hydrophobia, yet your country has wiped out the latter. f Why not attempt to reach the same happy result with e respect to the former? Where hydrophobia slew dozens, L 1 the death-rate resulting'from polluted milk reaches thous- . p ands. My experience justifies me in asserting that by means of Pasteurisation, universally and efficiently applied, not only will summer diarrhoea become rare, but several other diseases, e.g., typhoid and scarlet fever, diphtheria and cholera. My present visit to En gland was for the purpose of 3 taking certain definite steps to obtain for this country O 1 the advantages of Pasteurisation. On hearing of the j" position and the opposition of certain vested interests, I 5 abandon the project for the present. a Should your readers wish for further information on this subject, Dr. S. G. Moore,, the Medical Officer of Health for Huddersfield, who hasi helped me with this work for the last fifteen years, will have pleasure in giving it. Yours very sincerely j MR. NATHAN STRAUS, former President of the =j Department of Health, New York City. g F Imperial Hotel, Torquay, Sept., 9. jj [ MILK SUPPLIED BY I IS PASTEURISED. { DEPOTS EVERYWHERE.
