SHORT-LIVED LIBERTY.
ESCAPE BY A PRISONER. TEN DAYS BREAD AND WATER A Court was hold at the Mount Eden Gaol yesterday., when a young prisoner, David Thomas, was charged before Mr. J. E. Wilson, S.M., with having attempted to escape from custody. The offence was alleged to have occurred at the Waikure Prison Camp,, near Waimarino, last Friday. Accused was further charged with the theft of a suit of clothes, which was prison property. The evidence showed that accused, who had given his word of honour not to attempt to escape, was in a hut with several other men, He made good his escape, however, but* was captured the same day and was later brought to Auckland. Tho magistrate said the case was one of a man who had abused hia privileges. Ho was sentenced to 10 days bread and water. Accused is at present serving a term of three years' reformative treatment for breaking and entering at Wellington.
