INDIA AND CALIPHATE.
ELECTION FAVOURED. AGA KHAN COUNSELS RESTRAINT. A. and N.Z. DELHI, Nov. 12. The Aga Khan has cabled from Paris that he is returning to India in December. He warns Indian Moslems against precipitate and ignorant action, and advises the sending of a strong deputation to Europe. A certain section of the vernacular press publishes a wild statement that the army of the Amir of Afghanistan is marching on India in connection with tho Near East crisis, which, of course, is totally untrue. Enlightened Moslem clerical opinion favours the election of the Caliph instead of an hereditary Sultan, as in full conformity with Islamic commandments. The principle of inheritance was an innovation. Moawiya. the head of the famous Moslem shrine in Delhi, has issued a communique in the course of which ho says: " May Angora's decision prove a return to the days of the first four great Caliphs and to rightful successors of the Holy Prophet. The whole Islamic world will heartily welcome an elected Caliph."
