GAIN BY MIGRATION.
NET INCREASE OF 8872.
RETURNS FOR NINE MONTHS
The official returns of external immigration for the nine months ended September 30 show, including crews of ships, 25,860 arrivals and 23,329 departures, a gain to t/he Dominion of only 2531. But by means of the questionaire, which all travellers are asked to fill in, the movement of population can now be analysed. The permanent addition to the population by immigration during the period was in fact 8872 persons. Of the arrivals, 7330 were visitors, and that classification covered 11.710 of the departures, so that the net loss in the temporary population was 4380. There was also a temporary reduction of the permanent population by 1913, owing to the departure of 9889 residents, while those returning from abroad numbered 7976. • Immigrants intending permanent residence numbered 10,554, while former citizens departing permanently totalled 1682. The actual gain by.immigration is shown by these figures to have been 8872. During the nine months from April 1, 1921, when the new record system was inaugurated, to December 31, 1921, the net gab was 9686. The returns for tSie 18 months from April 1, 1921, to September 30, 1922, ehow a total of 21,688 new permanent residents, against which was the loss of 3130 permanent departures, leaving a net gain of 18,558. During the period 19,996 residents have gone abroad, and 18,134 returned, so that apparently there were 1862 fewer people under that heading in the Dominion at the end of the period. Similarly the departing visitors exceeded the arrivals by 6451.
